Mark Simonson brings all of his art and design talent to the table when designing a type font. One of his most successful, Felt Tip Roman, is based on his own handwriting and grew into an entire family:

“
Felt Tip Roman is one of my most popular fonts, and the first one I released in 1989. You've probably seen it in ads for Marriott, posters for the film Memento, and Alamo Car Rental, and practically everywhere else. It is popular with children's book publishers, and it was cool to see it used as Hagrid's handwriting in the Harry Potter books.”

“
Felt Tip Senior (2000) is a faithful rendering of my father's handwriting, which of course, had a big influence on my own handwriting, now immortalized in Felt Tip Roman. Originally created as a gift; release to the market with permission."

“
Felt Tip Woman (2003) is based on the handwriting of graphic designer Patricia Thompson. The name was inspired by a misunderstanding: Pat was working with the editor of a children's book review when she noticed that some type in one of the books was set in Felt Tip Roman. She pointed this out to the editor who replied, ‘Did you say Felt Tip Woman? What a strange name for a typeface.’ “
