I am interested in finding a "generic"
contract for illustration work which I could
modify for each project I work on. I am new
to the illustration industry, and therefore
have never had to write this kind of
contract. I thought it would be important to
have this in place before I actually need to
meet with a prospective client. And I would
rather have a client sign my contract than
for me to sign their contract. From reading
the posts here, it sounds like licensing and
copyright are the core elements of an
illustration contract. Thanks for any help on
the subject.

You can find generic contracts in "Graphic Artist Guild Pricing and Ethical Guidlines" &I'd also recommend "Business and Legal forms for Illustrators" by Tad Crawford.  It has the forms on CD so they can be personalized very easily on your 'puter.

Check Borders or the other big bookstores.

Both excellent suggestions, Brian. The "Letter of Agreement" available from the Guild's Contract Monitor website is also good.  All these contracts, of course, are templates, which should be tweaked or adjusted so as reflect the needs of the person using them rather than merely being copied exactly.

Licensing and copyright are the core elements of the illustration business, not just the contracts.  Illustrators are in the business of licensing the copyrights to their work.
