Does anyone know who owns or is running this site of The New Yorker cartoons?

http://www.cartoonbank.com

I thought I heard that MIRA had acquired the whole New Yorker collection. The prices don't seem too bad but what kind of commission does the cartoonist get?

The reason I ask is that The Washington Post used a cartoon fom them for a Business section cover story today and i had never heard of this site.

According to Network Solutions' WhoIs function (see the results here) cartoonbank.com is owned by CartoonBank, 382 Warburton Ave., Hastings-on-Hudson, NY 10706. Administrative Contact is Bob Mankoff.

My understanding is that the New Yorker owns the collection.  It is on the MIRA site.  If their agreement with the site is the same as the ASMP's photographers then I believe MIRA takes a 30% cut on sales.

However, I do not know if the cartoonists receive any part of the sales revenues.  I believe The New Yorker buys all its cartoons under work-for-hire contracts.  Perhaps someone out there can confirm what the exact arrangement is?

My knowledge is limited to knowing that the contact name, Bob Mankoff, is the cartoon editor at the NYer. He also is a cartoon contributor to the same magazine. Yes the NYer buys all rights to the cartoons. I also don't know if there is some arrangement with the cartoonist regarding the bank and/or if it is separate from the purchase by the magazine.

Reading through the site it looks as if the artists do recieve some kind of royalty, which under work-for-hire The New Yorker would have no obligation to pay. To the New Yorkers credit, though, at least they pay a pretty high fee when buying the rights to begin with. What really gets me is the clients that are trying to get away with WFH at standard editorial prices. I'm sure they are planning for their future, but does it have to be at the expense of ours?
